Stuffed Animal Imagination 1st Grade

Big Idea: Imagination

Overview: This lesson encourages students to use their imagination to create unique stuffed animal characters using shapes and colors. They will observe and draw stuffed animals using pencils and markers. Students will then create their own imaginative stuffed animals using colored construction paper, drawing materials, glue and scissors. After completing their artwork, students share their creations with the class, explaining characteristics of their characters and how they used shape and color. They are encouraged to ask questions and provide feedback on each other's artwork.

Essential Questions:

  • How do we draw from observation?

  • Where do we see shapes in your stuffed animal?

  • How do we use shape and textures into our artwork?

The unit aims to improve students' understanding of shapes and color enhancing their artistic skills and imagination, and encouraging critical thinking about their artwork.

Objective: Students will observe, describe, and draw stuffed animals based on shape and color, then create their own unique stuffed animal characters incorporating those elements.

Differentiated Instruction:

  • Help students cut paper / Provide pre-cut paper shapes

  • Provide students with sheets of various shapes and textures.

  • Tape instead of glue for sensory

  • Classroom screen with visual aids & timer

Assessment Strategies: During class walk around and ask students about their artwork. At the end of the lesson students will share their stuffed animal character and characteristics, describing where they used shape and color.
